What Is Selenium?
Selenium is an essential micronutrient found in foods such as Brazil nuts, bread, grains, meat, poultry, fish, and eggs. The reason it’s “essential” is because you must get selenium from your diet.
Selenium binds to the amino acid cysteine in the body to form selenoproteins. Selenoproteins play a vital role in numerous bodily processes, such as thyroid and immune function, reproductive health, and DNA synthesis.
Until 1957, scientists believed that selenium was toxic to humans, and that it should be avoided completely. We now know that selenium is an important nutrient that’s vital to our health.
That said, it is possible to consume too much selenium (especially if you eat a lot of high-selenium foods), which is why it’s important to moderate your selenium intake.

Selenium and Inflammation
Having high levels of chronic inflammation is associated with the development of numerous health conditions, such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.
Selenium inhibits the activation and release of the most inflammatory proteins in the body, such as interleukin-6, interleukin-8, TNF-alpha, and NF-kappaB, and has been shown to reduce levels of an important marker of inflammation called C-reactive protein (CRP).
Selenium and Oxidative Stress
Free radicals are molecules produced either in the body as part of metabolism, or as a result of being exposed to carcinogens in the environment. An excess of free radicals in the body leads to what is known as oxidative stress, which can increase your risk of numerous diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cataracts, and cancer.
Research shows that antioxidants such as selenium help to neutralize the damage done by free radicals, and protect your body from oxidative stress.
Selenium and Thyroid Function
One of the main functions of the thyroid gland is to release hormones that regulate your metabolism. If the production of these hormones is disrupted in any way, many of the body’s functions, including heart rate, breathing rate, and digestion may be affected.
The thyroid gland contains more selenium than any other organ in the body. If you are deficient in selenium, it’s likely your thyroid’s function will be impaired, and you may develop a thyroid disorder, such as Hashimoto’s disease, Grave’s disease, hypothyroidism, autoimmune thyroiditis, or enlarged thyroid (goiter).
Selenium and Immune Function
Maintaining a healthy immune system helps to ward off pathogens like viruses, bacteria, and protozoa, and reduces the risk of getting sick.
Research shows that having low levels of selenium is associated with compromised immune function, whereas having good levels of selenium has been shown to have a positive effect on
antiviral immunity, autoimmunity, sepsis, allergic asthma, and chronic inflammatory disorders.
Selenium and Cognitive and Mental Health
Studies show there’s a link between having low levels of selenium and cognitive decline.
While it’s still unclear what effect supplementing with selenium has on cognitive health, there’s reason to believe that getting adequate levels of selenium over the long-term is better for staving off cognitive impairment than not getting enough.
Research also shows that low levels of selenium are associated with anxiety, depression, and
hostility, and that supplementing with selenium can markedly improve symptoms.
Selenium and Cardiovascular Health
A meta-analysis of 25 observational studies found that people with low selenium levels had a higher risk of coronary heart disease.
Research shows that selenium supplementation decreases levels of CRP, and increases levels of the powerful antioxidant glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), which likely minimizes the oxidative stress and inflammation that can lead to heart disease.
Selenium Side Effects
There are no side effects associated with selenium when taken at the correct dosage.

FAQ #1: What’s the recommended dietary allowance of selenium?
The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of selenium is 55 mcg per day, though studies looking at the effects of selenium supplementation routinely use much higher doses than this.
People’s average selenium intake is highly variable and largely depends on the selenium content of the soil that your food was grown in. As consuming too much is harmful, it’s best to err on the side of caution and aim for around 55 mcg per day (and no more than 400).

Meal Plan Waiver
In consideration of being allowed to participate in the activities and programs offered by
Legion Athletics, Inc. and to use its nutrition programs and supplement and training advice, in addition to the payment of any fee or charge, I do hereby waive, release and forever discharge and hold harmless Legion Athletics, Inc. and its consultants, officers, agents, and employees from any and all responsibility, liability, cost and expenses, including injuries or damages, resulting from my participation in any activities, or my use of any programs designed by Legion Athletics, Inc. I do also hereby release Legion Athletics, Inc. its consultants, officers, agents and employees from any responsibility or liability for any injury, damage or disorder (physical, metabolic, or otherwise) to myself, or in any way arising out of or connected with my participation in any activities with Legion Athletics, Inc.
I understand that Legion Athletics, Inc. and its consultants, officers, agents, and employees are not healthcare professionals. The services I have received from Legion Athletics, Inc do not provide or offer and are not a replacement for professional medical evaluation, advice, diagnosis, or treatment (“medical advice”). While Legion Athletics, Inc. believes that the information provided through our services and the site is current and reliable, Legion Athletics, Inc. cannot and does not make any such guarantee or warranty.
I hereby agree that before using our services, you will consult your physician or other health care provider for medical advice, particularly if you are at risk for problems arising from changes in your diet or lifestyle. The services provided by Legion Athletics, Inc. are not intended to be used by minors or individuals with health conditions that makes the kind of changes to diet or lifestyle suggested by our services unsafe or inappropriate. Furthermore, I hereby understand that Legion Athletics, Inc. shall have no obligation or responsibility to monitor my health status or health condition or to contact or alert any medical or emergency professional.
I understand and am aware that strength, flexibility, and aerobic exercise, including the use of
equipment are a potentially hazardous activity. I also understand that fitness activities involve a
risk of injury and even death, and that I am voluntarily participating in these activities and using
equipment and machinery with knowledge of the dangers involved. I hereby agree to expressly
assume and accept any and all risks of injury or death related to said fitness activities. In
addition, I certify that I am 18 years of age or older.
I do hereby further declare myself to be physically sound and suffering from no condition,
impairment, disease, infirmity or other illness that would affect nutrient metabolism or prevent
my participation or use of equipment or machinery except as hereinafter stated. I do hereby
acknowledge that Legion Athletics, Inc. has recommended to me that I obtain a physician’s approval for my participation in an exercise/fitness activity or in the use of exercise equipment and machinery. I also acknowledge that Legion Athletics, Inc. has recommended that I have a yearly or more frequent physical examination and consultation with my physician as to physical activity, exercise and use of exercise and training equipment so that I might have his/her recommendations concerning these fitness activities and equipment use. I acknowledge that I have either had a physical examination and been given my physician’s permission to participate, or that I have decided to participate in activity and use of equipment, machinery, and programs designed by Legion Athletics, Inc. without the approval of my physician and do hereby assume all responsibility for my participation and activities, and utilization of equipment and machinery in my activities.
I understand that all diet and training programs, nutrition and supplementation advice, and any and all other forms of information obtained from Legion Athletics, Inc. are not meant to treat or manage any health condition. I understand the need to consult with a healthcare provider prior to adjusting current lifestyle or eating habits or beginning any new diet and/or training plan.
In addition, I hereby represent and warrant that I am currently covered by an accident and
health insurance policy. With my purchase of products or services from Legion Athletics, Inc., I understand that results of any sort are not guaranteed and agree not to hold Legion Athletics, Inc. staff liable for any outcomes or a lack thereof. With my purchase of any Legion Athletics, Inc. products or services, I understand that they are only guaranteed to work in software designed for a PC computer such as Microsoft Excel. I understand that I am purchasing having known that beforehand and understand that using any other application besides Microsoft Excel might result in the products not working with 100% functionality.
