Ariana Grande is finally releasing her new fragrance, R.E.M., and instead of the usual promotion and marketing that surrounds one of the launches, she’s created an entire animated film around the highly anticipated scent.
On November 12, Grande herself shared the news on Instagram, posting a snippet from the full movie. “It’s pretty wild, we hope you love it,” she wrote, tagging animator Olivier Lescot. In the mini-movie, which was posted to Ari’s YouTube channel, an animated Grande and her pig, Piggy, are floating in space when news comes that her faithful dog Toulouse has gone missing.
The two venture off to find him and end up in a magical land, where they find Toulouse but also have to battle an evil robot monster with their magical crystals before taking the dog home. The song “R.E.M.,” which was featured on her album Sweetener, doesn’t actually play at all in the clip, though animated Grande does sing a tiny bit of the tune to Toulouse at the end of the movie. The perfume doesn’t feature at all in the movie either, but the magic crystals are likely a reference to the bottle’s crystalline design.
If this sounds familiar, it’s because the singer has done something similar before. She basically released a sequel to her “Thank U, Next” video when she dropped the fragrance of the same name last year, filming more of the iconic teen comedy references to promote the scent. She’s also given us a glimpse at the animated Ariana before; the character was visible on the perfume box when she gave us a sneak peek earlier this year. “In my dreams… I’m always the version of myself I was in break free tbh,” Ariana wrote at the time. “I always wanted to spend more time as this character/in this world … so maybe that’s just what I’ll do. So much to look forward to.”
R.E.M. is available at Ulta and features notes of fig, caramel, lavender, pear blossom, musk, and sandalwood. It’s the sixth scent in the star’s line, and while it may not turn you into an intergalactic superhero with a pig sidekick, there’s no denying that R.E.M. is dreamy indeed.
